Mother's Day is quickly becoming one of my most favorite holidays. And not for any selfish reason either. To me its a day to spend with my reasons for celebrating...my kids...and my wonderful man who helped me make them. ;) No time spent alone at a spa getting a facial or my nails done for this girl. Instead there was a little bit of sleeping in (while Andrew cleaned the house and watched the kids no less), homemade pancakes for breakfast, playing in the sunshine with the kids (I worked on my tan), lunch at an all-you-can-eat buffet, car seat shopping for the little guy, new shoe purchases for little feet, window shopping and kids tucked into bed after which Andrew and I watched TV while cuddling on the couch. I set my camera aside for (most of) the day and just enjoyed spending time with those I love. I wouldn't have it any other way.
At one of the stores we stopped at Lily found a stamp and ink pad set and asked if she could get it. We thought that was a reasonable request and told her that she would have to wait until her brother was in bed to use them. She was super excited to get home to try them out. While I nursed her brother and put him to sleep that evening, her and her father apparently collaborated on a project because when I came out of my bedroom she presented me with a Happy Mother's Day card! My very first one!
I can't wait to see what the holiday holds for me in the future. Hopefully many more handmade cards.

Lily (drinking my iced coffee from McDonald's): Coffee's the best!
Mommy: You're kinda cute.
Lily (grinning slyly at me): No, I'm not cute. I'm adorable.
Lily: Mommy there's chocolate on my philtrum!
Mommy: Let's go to Ross and Marshall's. Ok?
Lily: Actually. Let's go to Lowes.
Mommy: You want to go to Lowes?
Lily: Yeah, Lowes is good.
Lily: I don't pee in my crotch. That's a naughty thing to do.
Lily (looking at the drink in her cup): This is exactly what I need!
Lily (with her hand on her chin in contemplation): I wonder if we should take fishy to the store with us.
Lily (asking for cereal): No! Put it in my teacup which is got a L on it for me.
Lily: Mommy I'm busy for my food (which means: I'm too busy to eat my food)
Lily: Mom? Can you get me something? (puts a hand over her face) My face hurts.
Lily (sighs dramatically as she's laying on the couch): I'm exhausted.
Mommy: Its time to get up now. You took a long nap. Almost 2 hours. Do you want me to carry you and put you on the couch?
Lily (sleepily): No.
Mommy: You like taking a nap don't you?
Lily (nodding): I want to lay here and relax. Just leave me alone for a little while.
Lily (hearing Reuben crying from his crib): Mom! Go rescue my brother!
Mommy: Where do you want to go eat?
Lily: At the restaurant.
Mommy: Which restaurant?
Lily: The pink one.
Mommy: I don't know the pink one. Where is it?
Lily: On the left.
Lily: My toe hurts.
Mommy: I'll kiss it better.
Mommy: Does that feel better now?
Mommy: What do you want me to do about it?
Lily: You need to sew it back on.
Lily (sneezes): (quietly to herself) Bless you.
Lily (as she runs to get in the shower because she's covered in dirt from playing outside): I'm disgusting!

Wears 12 month clothes
You've hit the doubles digits little man. For goodness sake stop growing! I know if you could talk you'd have a lot to say against that idea since you've learned so much fun stuff in the past 10 months. Why just this past month you've learned how to cruise along the couch, get to the coffee table and back again. Now when you set your mind to wanting to go somewhere there's nothing stopping you. Except maybe the gate I put up so you can't escape to the outside when I'm not looking.
You have your own little mind now too. You know what you like and don't like and currently you aren't a big fan of diaper changes. Oh the drama when it comes time to change your diaper. You don't like sitting or lying still. You'd rather be wiggling your way to the edge of the bed and looking over than having your butt wiped. I can understand that. Watching the dog laying on the floor licking himself or laughing at yourself in the mirror is way more interesting than having your diaper changed.
Oh and you stood up in your crib for the first time. Which brought on a whole new set of issues. The mattress needed to be lowered so I did. But then you decided you didn't like that it was different and you started refusing to go to sleep without screaming and requiring that I rock, bounce, shush and/or nurse you to sleep. So we were back to doing the check-on-you-and-let-you-know-we're-still-here-and-that-everything's-ok-every-5-minutes thing while you screamed your little heart out. Poor baby. Luckily it didn't last too long and you were back to falling asleep on your own again...most of the time. Now we just need to work on helping you learn to self sooth so you're not waking up every 3 - 4 hours at night and I have to stick a boob in your face to get you to go back to sleep. What can I say though? you prefer sleeping in bed with your mommy to that cold, boring crib. I can't complain too much. It makes me happy being able to cuddle and nurse you at night and wake up to you sitting in the middle of the bed in the morning clapping your hands with a big smile on your face. I need to leave my camera on the dresser one of these nights before I go to bed so I can take a picture...or video...of you in the morning. It certainly puts a smile on my face too watching you greet the day my sweet little boy.
While you may prefer me at night for nursies and soothing back to sleep, during the day its all about Daddy. You light up when you see him walk into the room and you look for him when he walks away. You love it when he holds you enveloped in his arms, you stare and gently touch his face with your hand. I guess its fitting that you said "dada" first. :)
I love you Reuben Garrett. You light up our lives with your infectious smile and deep belly laughs. I could just eat you up!
