Baby Boy is Here!

Reuben Garrett decided to make an early arrival and came into the world a week early on June 25 at 8:15 am after 6 hours of labor (more on that later ;).

9 pounds 14 ounces and 21 inches.

We got home from the hospital yesterday afternoon just in time to celebrate his big sister's 2nd birthday. After everyone took a 3 hour nap we went out to Ruby Tuesday for dinner where Lily received a birthday cupcake and had Happy Birthday sung to her.

We are already so much in love with this new little man in our lives. Lily gives him kisses daily and tries to share her blocks with him. Andrew has taken the week off from work and we're just relaxing at home delighting in our brand new family of 4.

First Sleepover

Lily had her first sleepover this week and let's just say it wasn't a huge success. Actually, I was just babysitting a friend's daughter overnight but I kept calling it a sleepover cause it sounded cute. :)

They're both only 2 years old, or almost 2 in Lily's case, so sleepovers aren't something that will be happening too often any time soon. But it was interesting to watch them handle the situation.

Really the only rough patch came when it was time to go to bed (of course). I put Emilie (the little girl I was watching) to bed in Lily's toddler bed in her room and Lily slept in her crib. Emilie cried for her mommy for about 15 - 20 minutes, then rolled over and went to sleep. Lily on the other hand, cried and screamed for about 45 minutes. I think she was upset that her routine was messed up and didn't want anyone else in her room with her. Creature of habit that one. Takes after someone else I know...hmmm...;) In the end a lot of soothing and reassuring both of them that everything was ok and Mommy loves you helped out a lot.

During the course of the night and day that she was here they watched some Curious George:

Played with Lily's birthday gifts:

And took naps (Lily's trying to get Emily out of bed after nap time by enticing her with "play toys!"):

We'll see how a "real" sleepover goes when they're a few years older.

Maternity Photo Shoot

We had a maternity photo shoot back when I was 36 weeks and 6 days along and I'm so excited to finally be able to share the gorgeous results with you!

A dear friend took these, and I couldn't be more pleased than if we had paid several hundred dollars to have a professional do them. I gave her some ideas I had for poses in mind and she contributed her own as well. We felt really comfortable (despite the heat) and had a lot of fun with it.

Photobucket

Like I said, it was very hot and humid out, even for 9 in the morning. Lily did very well despite the heat probably because Daddy took time here and there to walk her around and show her things to distract her while I had a few pictures taken of just me.

We did the shoot at a local park/golf community. It had a lake (complete with alligators), bridge, dock, gazebo, etc. It was just perfect.

I'm so glad we had photos taken of this pregnancy. I mean, I have a few decent shots of when I was pregnant with Lily that Andrew took, but these are something super special that I can frame and show this little guy when he's older.

"See that's you in Mommy's tummy. And see how your older sister is hugging my tummy tight? She's always loved you very much. Despite the fact that she takes your toys and hits you when Mommy's not looking." ;P

Father's Day

Andrew started a new job yesterday. And Father's Day was on Sunday. So last night Lily and I took him out to dinner after he got home from work to celebrate both special occasions. We ate at a local Greek place and it was very yummy. Its one of our favorite places to eat at.

Lily was asking "Where'd Daddy go?" off and on all day yesterday and Andrew said that he missed her like crazy. Both had their normal schedule disrupted and it was strange to them. Its going to take a while for them to adjust to this new way of things. :)

We celebrated Lily's 2nd birthday yesterday with friends and family. I decided to have it 10 days early due to logistics. With my due date being only 6 days after Lily's actual birthday, I knew there was a good chance that this little guy could arrive before we had a chance to celebrate our first child's birthday.

The theme this year was, of course, Curious George. A good friend made the cake and I am still amazed at how gorgeous it was and how yummy it tasted (and still does, since we have tons of leftovers!). I made the circle garland out of felt and string and it was super easy. I found the idea on this blog. I plan on hanging it in Lily's room. I don't have the heart to just toss it out.

We had a bunch of Lily's favorite foods: bananas, grapes, pretzels, cucumbers, vegetarian hot dogs,(homemade) pasta salad, baked beans and cheese cubes. My child isn't really into sweets that much. It depends on what it is. Like Annie's bunny cookies. Which Grandma and Grandpa gave her as a present. :) She was pretty much done with gifts after she opened that one. She's begging me to open it in the picture above.

She really enjoyed opening her presents this year, with a little bit of help if the wrapping was difficult. I remember last year I had to basically do all of the unwrapping for her and show her what it was. Not this year. She knew exactly what to do. She loved everything she received. Lots of puzzles, a CARS umbrella (and yes I let her open it in the house), books, Melissa & Doug wooden play pizza, sand toys, a sand table - from Daddy and Mommy, just to name a few.

It was a joy watching her interact with everyone since she can be somewhat shy when there is a lot of attention on her or there are a lot of people around. She was smiling and laughing the entire day and had the biggest grin on her face when we sang happy birthday to her. Her closest friends and family were there to help her celebrate and I think she just was so happy to be having fun with everyone.

I can't believe my Baby Bean is (almost) 2 years old. She has given us so much happiness these past two years and we almost can't remember what life was like before she came into it. Nor do we want to. I'm amazed and in awe every single day that God has blessed me with such a sweet, precious baby girl and trusts me to raise her to be a good, caring, intelligent individual. I can only hope and pray that I do a good job at it...with His help.

I love you so much Lily.

Naps Happen

Lately Lily has taken to falling asleep at nap time anywhere and everywhere. Waking up between 5:30 and 6:30 am tires you out I guess. Like I would have any idea. *rolls eyes* This has been happening anywhere between 10:00 am and 12:30 pm. Its like she just...can't......make.........it............anymore. Zzzzzzz.

Its really the most adorable thing to practically trip over your toddler fast asleep on your kitchen floor or realize that its too quiet so you go looking for her and find her zonked out on the living room floor or couch.

Apparently the living room lights were too bright for her:

Photobucket

Andrew found her on the kitchen floor. And yes, that is one of his handkerchiefs she's using as a pillow. She often requests a "tissue" when going to bed and cuddles it as if it were a doll. Weird kid.

Photobucket

Here she fell asleep in her old baby bouncer (that I brought out of the closet to give away since we got a newer, nicer one - instead she adopted it as her official TV watching chair) watching Curious George and holding a plastic cup. I have no idea why she has a plastic cup.

The most normal position yet. Asleep on the couch.

With her stickers.

Conversations With My Daughter: Squeaky Mouse

I've decided to start a series on my blog entitled Conversations With My Daughter, which will be just that...bits of discussions we've had, her observations of the world around her and the unique sayings that make up just part of the charming little girl that she is.

Like the rest of my blog its a way for me to document something special in my life...before its lost in the cluttered details and distractions of everyday living.

This first episode took place Sunday night and went something like this:

Place: Lily's bedroom
Time: About an hour a half past her bedtime

Lily (softly yelling from her crib): Mommy! Need you!
Me (opening her door and going over to her standing in her crib): Yes, Lily. What do you need?
Lily (finger to ear): Hear a mouse.
Me: A mouse?...Oh...That's just the ceiling fan. It squeaks.

IKEA Window Shopping and Nursery Ideas

We were in Orlando this past week and what's a trip to Orlando without a stop at IKEA? Not going is practically sacrilegious! Well...in my world it is anyway.

We hadn't planned on buying anything, I just wanted to look around and gather ideas for decorating the nursery and whatnot (because IKEA's great for that!). But as usual, we cannot take a trip to IKEA without purchasing something.

I've been on a mission to redo Lily's room since we have another little one on the way and eventually he and Lily will be sharing the room. There are several big ticket items that need to be purchased such as a dresser (bought it and put it together Thursday night!), a toddler bed for Lily (which we have, set up already) and a toy storage system (we haven't settled on anything yet, but I have a few ideas).

My goal was to take pictures of things that struck my fancy so I could look at them at home and make plans from there.

I saw this and thought it might work as a hamper in the nursery. Its technically a wastebasket and its not that big which would be great since we don't have a lot of room in there anyway and I would have to empty it out more often which means clothes wouldn't pile up for days and days. Its better than the system I have now which is...nothing. Dirty clothes seem to end up everywhere.

I've been wanting to get a small table and chairs for Lily for like forever. She needs something to color and play with her toys on. But I can never find one I like. I don't want a cheap plastic set and it needs to be small enough to fit in the middle of her room or maybe out in the living room up against the wall. Wherever it goes, we don't have a lot of room in our house so that automatically eliminates a lot of options. Except this one. Its cute and perfect! And it comes in so many different colors. You could mix and match!

KRITTER table and chairs

This caught my eye, not because I'm looking for a small Lily size chair, but because it was so tiny and cute!

I loved this idea for displaying your child's name in their room. I've been brainstorming different ways to do just this. Not to mention that's my niece's name. :)

The three pictures above are from a room display that Lily dubbed "The Princess Room" as soon as she saw it. Except when she says it it sounds more like "Pincess." The bed curtain was her favorite part. Maybe an idea for over her toddler bed?

Something else I have been longing to get/make for Lily is a play kitchen. But alas. Again, we have no room for it. But she had fun trying this one out while we were there.

Photobucket

As for a solution to the lack of toy storage space in the room, after finding these ideas on Pinterest I'm convinced an EXPEDIT shelving unit would be perfect for the space. I'm thinking a 2x4 unit would work (check out #4) if we stood it on end. Ideally I'd love a 5x5 (like in #7) but we just don't have the room. Maybe someday.

I love the different basket ideas for small toys (like Legos and blocks) and the different ways to store books and larger toys.

At the end of the day we ended up going home with something we hadn't planned on purchasing but something we've been on the lookout for for a while now and that we need very much. A dresser for the nursery. I even let Andrew talk me into which one to get. I wasn't keen on it at first, I thought it was too modern and I was looking for something more traditional, but now that its set up in the room and I've put the kid's clothes in it, I am in love with it. We got the MALM 6-drawer dresser in white and I have to say we couldn't have made a better choice. The design is sleek and doesn't clutter up the look of the room with too much embellishments if you know what I mean. It blends right in. And boy is it roomy! You could fit a small child in one of those drawers.

Kind of like my child. ;)

Eventually all of these ideas will culminate in a finished nursery and I can't wait to share all the gorgeous details with you. But that's for another post...
