Three Sisters' Birthdays

Happy Birthday to Numbers 4, 5 and 8!!!

Aka: Maggie, Clara and Lydia.

No, they weren't all born on the same day but its close enough. Clara was born on April 28th and just celebrated her 24th birthday, Maggie arrived in the world April 29th and just turned 26 and Lydia's birthday is April 30th and she turns 19 today.

Needless to say, the last 3 days in April growing up, were always a crazy celebration of cake, presents and loud, obnoxious family members.

Actually, come to think of it, every day was like that...minus the cake and presents. ;)

I miss these girls so much and hope you each had a wonderful day! I miss the craziness of birthday get-togethers and I wish with all my heart I could be there to help celebrate with y'all.

Screen Free Week

Monday, April 30 - Sunday, May 6 is Screen Free Week and for the first time I've decided to participate. The decision was made in large part because we have been watching way too much TV for the past several days since all three of us have been sick with colds and stuck in the house. I think its going to be a good idea for Lily to have a break from Curious George and for me to lay off using the laptop for a while. I don't know if Andrew will go along with it, especially when it comes to cutting back on computer time, but I'll ask him about it tonight.

Instead of turning off all screens permanently for the week though, I'm going to modify it somewhat to accommodate my situation. You see since I live at least 1500 miles from my closest immediate family I use social media such as Facebook to keep in touch. And since there are so many of them its cheaper...and less time consuming...than calling each person even once a week.

This is my plan. No Netflix, movies or Youtube for Lily all week. Lily's the only person who watches anything during the day so the TV shouldn't have to be on at all during the hours when she's up. Now when it comes to Andrew and I watching TV we usually turn it on once she goes to bed about 8 pm and watch something on Netflix or cable...usually HGTV. The only show we do watch regularly is Mad Men which comes on AMC on Sunday nights at 10. We watched it tonight and I'm sure we'll watch it next week as well. But I'm going to cut back on the mindless, habitual TV watching on weekday evenings while sitting on the couch with my laptop in hand.

As for computer use, I have a bad habit of getting on it first thing in the morning and checking it in between cleaning, cooking and taking care of Lily. Its turned into a bit of an obsession I'll admit. So here's the plan. I'm not going to get on it until Lily goes to bed at night. And then only to check my Facebook, email and blogs quickly and then it goes off. This means less posting on here but I think I can deal with that. Or the posts will just be shorter so I'm not spending too much time on the computer and can spend it with my husband instead.

Cell phones and iPods and such aren't much of an issue since I don't talk on the ever. I barely even text any more. And since Lily threw our iPod in the trash (we're pretty sure that's where it disappeared to), well that's something I won't have to deal with...looking on the bright side.

So there you have it. My torturous brilliant plan to start getting us as a family unaddicted (Is that even a word? My spell checker didn't like it.) to technology and "plugged" into life. Ha ha. Just call me Punny Hannah. ;)

Now for some ideas of what to do with that all that free time. Some of these are to do with Lily when she's up during the day and others are for the afternoon and evening time once she's in bed. This is just for starters too. Feel free to suggest ideas in the comment section!

:: Read books
:: Play in the kiddie pool
:: Finger painting
:: Make homemade play dough
:: Work on my cross stitch
:: Practice my photography (that's the only screen that I will NOT be giving up!)
:: Work on my scrap-booking
:: Bake something
:: Listen to music (hmmmm, I may have to turn on the computer to do this one since we don't currently have a CD player)
:: Take walks around the neighborhood
:: Go to the park/playground
:: Play with chalk in the driveway
:: Color pictures
:: Make blanket forts
:: Play with blocks/Legos
:: Finish sewing/craft projects
:: Give ourselves pedicures

Wish me luck!

A Year Ago Today

You know how you can start with a thought or action and through the course of events end up somewhere completely different from where you started?

Yeah, I know, me too.

Lily and I are sick with colds today so we're staying inside and watching a lot of Curious George and reading library books. We've both been kind of cranky and tired so after lunch I put her down for a nap and figured I would take one too. Then I thought that if I did I probably wouldn't be able to fall asleep tonight and I need my sleep at night...hard as it is to get recently. So I figured I'd get on Andrew's computer in the bedroom instead and check out Facebook and the blogs I faithfully read. As I was opening my browser I saw the Photoshop icon on the desktop and it occurred to me that I should take the opportunity, while Lily is asleep, to work on a couple photo projects for my blog. So I'm in my pictures folder on my external hard drive and I click on a random folder...just because I sometimes enjoy looking at old pictures and reminiscing (I promise you this is going somewhere). I happened to have opened the April 2011 folder and I started clicking through each picture remembering the good times. Then I realized that the pictures were from this month last year and wouldn't it be cool to post some to my blog as a here's-what-we-looked-like-and-what-we-were-doing-a-year-ago kind of thing. So I jumped to the April 27th pictures and selected a few to include. But something was tickling at my brain. Like I should know something that hadn't occurred to me yet. The date. The 27th. Lily is 22 months old today! You see, I make sure I remember the 27th each month and take a few pictures of her on that day. I've done it every month and I can't believe I almost forgot today.

So this has now turned into a happy-22-months-to-my-Lily-Bean-my-how-you've-grown-in-the-past-year post.

The Owl and the Star

Today I let Lily watch Youtube while I was getting dinner ready. I started a playlist for her months ago and I add new videos to it when we come across some that she we like (Puppies playing in the yard to the sounds of Metallica? I don't think so).

She was cranky and its difficult to get anything done when you have a sniffly, crying toddler requesting you to pick her up every 5 minutes and nurse her whenever she sees you take a second to sit down. On the other hand, she has become so cuddly recently. And its not just because she's developing a cold. For the past few weeks whenever you pick her up she lays her down on your shoulder, says "hug" and wraps her tiny, little arms around your neck. And she'll even let me hold her in my lap with her head on my chest while we watch Curious George.

I don't know how long this affectionate spell will last so I'm really enjoying it while I can. Even when I need to get dinner started cause I'm starving and this pregnant mama needs to eat! Like now!

So enter Youtube, that wonderful creation of man that lets you create a list of videos that play one after the other so you don't have to leave the kitchen to click to play the next video every 2 minutes and 36 seconds. Now if they could only get rid of those pesky commercials. Lily has a low tolerance for them and therefore so do I.

This is currently Lily's favorite video. The only problem is, while she gets very excited and points out everything the owl and star are doing..."Ho'din' hands! Ow' f'yin'! Fun!"...she gets very distressed at the end of the video when the owl leaves to go back to his tree (Yes, apparently in my mind the owl is a boy). So distressed in fact, that her mouth goes from smiling to trembling within seconds. Usually I'm right there to explain that the owl has to go home now but they'll play again later. She's ok with that and I'm able to prevent an avalanche of tears. Not that I've ever seen her actually cry over it...until today. I heard "Bye Ow', Bye Star, Ni' Nite" from in the kitchen but I didn't make it to her in time and pretty soon she was sobbing her little heart out. It probably didn't help that I had accidentally closed the fridge door on her a few minutes prior to her watching the video...hhhmmm...

I'm thinking of taking the video off the list except she asks for it out of the blue sometimes. Oh well. I'll just have to continue making up explanations like, "The owl has to go to bed now and they have to say goodbye, but they'll play again tomorrow!" to my sensitive little girl. It really does make her happy to watch it.

30 Weeks

I can't believe our little boy is going to be here in about 10 weeks!

...Or 11 weeks if he's anything like his older sister.

Getting To Know Me

My friend Melissa posted this over on her blog and so I thought I would join in on the fun and give you a little "about me" info. Ya know, in case you were wondering. Besides, who doesn't like talking about them-self..themselves? Ahhh! The grammar Nazi in me is ashamed. Seriously, which one is it???

A. Age: 31 next month

B. Bed size: Queen. And its the perfect size.

C. Chore that you hate: Dishes. Hands down.

D. Dogs: We have one. Toby our Scottish Terrier. Frankly, I'm sick of him. I'm trying to be more tolerant but he doesn't make it easy when he's always underfoot, begging for food and just generally in the way. It certainly doesn't help that our house is very small and we don't have a fenced in yard.

E. Essential start to your day: Not to be gross or anything but, going to the bathroom. Hey! I'm pregnant. The girl can't help it. ;)

F. Favourite color: It changes. Right now I'm a little obsessed with turquoise.

G. Gold or Silver: Usually silver.

H. Height: 5'6"

I. Instruments you play: None. I took piano lessons when I was young which lasted maybe a month or two. I didn't want to practice and would rather play outside. I wish I had kept up with it though.

J. Job title: Homemaker/Mommy

K. Kids: 2. An almost 2 year old little girl and a little boy due in July.

L. Live: Central Florida. The land of perpetual flatness and sun.

M. Mother's name: Casey

N. Nicknames: I've been called Hannah Banana since the day I was born. The hubby just calls me Hannah, or Kate (my middle name) when he can't get my attention.

O. Overnight hospital stays: 3. Once when I was almost 18 and had my appendix out and ended up staying in the hospital with a high fever for 6 days. Another time a few years ago when I was having heart palpitations and I stayed overnight to be monitored by EKG. The last time was almost 2 years ago when I gave birth in the hospital.

P. Pet peeve: When people take out the trash and don't replace the bag.

Q. Quote from a movie: Anything said by Cary Grant.

R. Right or left handed: Right.

S. Siblings: 8 sisters and 2 brothers.

T. Time you wake up: Whenever Lily wakes up which is usually between 7-7:30.

U. Underwear: Right now, whatever's comfortable and stays in place. The prerogative of a pregnant woman. :)

V. Vegetable you hate: Beets.

W. What makes you run late: Procrastinating.

X. X-Rays you've had: A few chest x-rays in the past couple of years to check out my heart, one of my foot when I broke it back in 2003 and countless dental ones because I have such bad teeth (it must be the British in me).

Y. Yummy food that you make: A recent hit in our family is breakfast food. Namely gluten-free waffles and all the fixings.

Z. Zoo animal: I don't have a favorite. Although seeing the white tiger at the zoo last year was pretty neat.

If you feel so inclined leave your own answers in the comments section. Can't wait to read all about you!

Family Fishing Fun

Yesterday evening Andrew suggested an impromptu trip to the lake to go fishing. He's become very interested in fishing recently, and having never gone before in his life, has been itching to get his hand on a pole and try it out. Some friends of ours let him borrow a couple of poles and their tackle box and so off we went.

We drove to a local lake only a few miles away for a quick try out before dinner.

Once there, I decided the best option for Lily and I, while Andrew fished, was to stay by the beginning of the dock so she could play in the sand there.

That kept her occupied the entire time with a few (supervised) trips out onto the dock to "see Daddy!"

I was terrified of her falling in the water while my back was turned so I told her to hold tight to Daddy's leg. That lasted a few seconds before she was racing back down the dock to the sand. While the water wasn't that deep I still almost had a heart attack every time she got too close to the edge or walked at more than a snail's pace while on the dock. Kids have no fear.

I thought I was taking a lot of pictures of my family but I needed to get one of me as well so here is a self portrait. :)

So even though Andrew didn't catch a fish he had a lot of fun putting the worms on the hook and practicing his casting and Lily had a blast getting dirty from head to toe...per usual. Me? I was entertained taking lots of pictures and running after Lily trying to keep her from a dunking. Although with all the dirt she accumulated a quick dunk in the lake might have done her some good...

When Andrew figures out which pole he wants to buy for himself (he's in the research phase right now which could last a while), I'm thinking we should get ones for Lily and I as well. We let Lily try pretty much everything we do...supervised of course...and I think she would enjoy it. She talks about "fishin'" enough as it is. :)
